Vila Franca do Campo, on the island of São Miguel, is a wonderful municipality of unparalleled beauty. There are several attractions of this village. Get to know it.

Islet of Vila Franca do Campo

The islet of Vila Franca do Campo is one of the ex-libris of São Miguel Island and the Azores Archipelago. Also known as the Princess Ring, it is an authentic volcanic jewel in the ocean. The submerged caldera creates a natural pool of crystalline waters, protected by high volcanic cliffs, which offers a unique and exciting swimming experience. This natural pool is about 150 meters in diameter, in which you can swim and snorkel.

The water in its natural pool has a warmer temperature than the outside, as there is a small opening facing the island's coast, preventing sea turmoil from entering and the water remains warmer.

The Ilhéu has a rich and diverse fauna and flora that contributed to its classification as a Natural Reserve. Its walls are lined with endemic vegetation. There are no inhabitants on the site. What you can find are seabirds such as Cory's Shearwaters and Terns and other sea creatures such as fidalgo crabs. On the islet there is a bathroom infrastructure and lifeguards.

Visits to the Islet of Vila Franca do Campo are made during the summer season, between June and October. Its access is controlled with a view to its preservation and conservation. Departures take place every day at Cais de Tagarete, in Vila Franca do Campo. The journey takes about 10 minutes. Entrance is limited to 400 people per day, so it is recommended that you schedule your visit in advance.

Viewpoint and Hermitage of Our Lady of Peace

One of the best known and sought after places in Vila Franca do Campo is the Viewpoint and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz. These are located at the top of Monte de Nossa Senhora da Paz and have a memorable view over the village and its famous islet. This place is definitely a must visit! The viewpoint is at an altitude of 215 meters and, therefore, is one of the most superb views of the island.

The Chapel was built in the 18th century on top of another temple. This has an imposing staircase with 100 steps and 10 levels that symbolize the Our Fathers of the Joyous and Sorrowful Mysteries and the Hail Marys.

Vinha D'Areia Beach

In the coast of Vila Franca do Campo is the wonderful Praia da Vinha D’Areia for some fantastic swims! It is worth knowing the place. The beach is 320 meters long and the beach has good support infrastructure, including for people with reduced mobility. Its waters are clean and surrounded by rocks.

Factory of “Queijadas da Vila do Morgado”

Close to the Vila Franca do Campo Marina is the Factory of “Queijadas da Vila do Morgado”. This place is a must visit in Vila. You can taste the freshly made queijadas sprinkled with icing sugar. They are delicious! On your visit you can also have the opportunity to observe part of its manufacturing process. This traditional sweet from the village has been around for over 500 years.
