Spring in São Miguel brings greener landscapes, waterfalls at their peak, and perfect trails to explore nature in a peaceful and authentic way.

Iconic Landscapes

In spring, São Miguel’s landscapes become even more striking. The Lagoa das Sete Cidades, with its contrast of blue and green, gains a vibrant atmosphere, often wrapped in mist that makes the scenery even more special.

Lagoa do Fogo reveals a nearly untouched beauty, surrounded by slopes covered in lush vegetation that descend towards the water. In the northeast of the island, the Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint stands out for its well-kept gardens and wide ocean views, where spring adds even more color and life.

Trails to Explore

With mild temperatures and nature at its best, spring is perfect for hiking.

The Serra Devassa trail crosses a protected area shaped by ancient volcanic formations, cones, and wetlands, offering wide views over the Picos volcanic complex. Along the way, you’ll find lagoons such as Lagoa das Éguas, Lagoa do Carvão, Lagoa Rasa, and Lagoa das Empadadas, true mirrors of water surrounded by vegetation. The trail also passes through a cryptomeria forest.

The Lagoa do Fogo trail is one of the island’s most iconic routes, leading to one of São Miguel’s most preserved lagoons. Along the way, natural springs and the peaceful surroundings make the experience even more memorable.

Highlighted Waterfalls

The Salto do Cabrito waterfall, located in Ribeira Grande, is one of the most well-known on the island. Standing about 35 meters high, it is known for its pure waters and impressive natural surroundings. It can be accessed on foot or by car, making it quite accessible.

Meanwhile, the Ribeira dos Caldeirões waterfall, set within the Natural Park of the same name, is a must-visit. Surrounded by lush vegetation, it combines natural beauty with easy walking paths, making it ideal for a family visit.

Gardens in Bloom

In spring, the island’s gardens truly stand out. The Parque Terra Nostra, in Furnas, is a large botanical garden featuring a wide variety of exotic and endemic species, including camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, and giant bamboo.

In Ponta Delgada, the Jardim António Borges invites visitors to enjoy peaceful walks among century-old trees, lakes, and shaded paths, offering moments of relaxation in the heart of the city.
