The island of São Miguel is a green paradise with breathtaking landscapes and a holiday destination with unique characteristics. Get to know it!

In spring, it’s whale season

The Azores are known to be a true sanctuary for cetaceans! It is true that the archipelago is one of the best places in the world to observe these magnificent marine beings. There are animals that can be seen throughout the year, such as sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. We call these resident species.

During the spring and summer, coming from the south, the great baleen whales, such as the Fin Whale, the Sei Whale and the Blue Whale, arrive in the Azores.

These large cetaceans use the Azores as a “service station”, to feed and replenish energy, before continuing their migration northwards.

The biggest religious festival in the Azores

On the island of São Miguel, the biggest religious festivity of the archipelago takes place, the feast of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. Senhor Santo Cristo is a piece of sacred art, which is worshiped at the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, located in Campo de São Francisco, in the city of Ponta Delgada. It takes place in the month of May, in the fifth week after Easter. This is a tribute to the Image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres.

This festivity has a vast program of Eucharistic celebrations, with emphasis on the Procession on the Sunday of the feast, the Outdoor Mass and the changing of the Image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres.

It attracts thousands of visitors, both residents of the island and the Azores, as well as tourists and emigrants, mostly from the United States of America and Canada, who return to their origins at this time of the year, and who pay their homage and their faith to the Senhor Santo Cristo. Others keep their promises to the Lord.
