To explore on São Miguel Island

On the “green island,” don’t miss the hike to Serra Devassa. This trail crosses ancient volcanic formations and small lakes, offering views over the Picos volcanic complex.

The route passes volcanic cones, wetlands, and a forest of cryptomeria trees, allowing close contact with the geodiversity and nature of the Azores. Among the lakes, the highlights are Lagoa das Éguas, Lagoa Rasa, and Lagoa das Empadadas—perfect for a break.

Along the trail, you can also spot birds, including chaffinches, blackbirds, and the common buzzard.

The Lagoa do Fogo hiking trail is, in turn, a true treasure in the heart of São Miguel, ready to be explored. This trail is highly appreciated by both visitors and locals, thanks to its natural landscapes and the stunning Lagoa do Fogo, located inside a volcanic crater.

The tranquillity of the area and the grandeur of nature create a unique sense of peace, making this experience truly unforgettable.

Also, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the historic center of Ponta Delgada through a city tour. This tour begins with a walk along the main avenue, continuing to the Mercado da Graça, where you can find a variety of products—from pineapples to traditional cheeses. It is the ideal place to discover regional products and feel the local atmosphere.

Next, the walk continues through the historic center, where the city’s main monuments are explored, revealing the history that shaped the identity and culture of the local population.

During the tour, there is a stop for rest before continuing toward Campo de São Francisco, the stage for the festivities of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, the second largest religious celebration in Portugal. In this emblematic space, you will also find the São Brás Fort, the Emigrant Statue, the Church of São José, and the Convent of Esperança, offering a complete picture of Ponta Delgada’s historical and religious heritage.

Exploring Terceira

One of Terceira’s must-do hikes is the Mistérios Negros Trail, located in the Serra de Santa Bárbara Nature Reserve. The path passes unique volcanic formations, pastures with wild cattle, and endemic vegetation, offering a true immersion into the island’s preserved interior.

Highlights of the hike include Pico da Bagacina, Lagoa do Negro, and the crater of Pico Gaspar, rich in endemic flora. The tour includes a visit to the Gruta do Natal, with impressive lava tubes. Lunch is served outdoors.

The trail ends in Angra do Heroísmo, with a stop at the Caldeira do Guilherme Moniz, and concludes at the Quinta dos Açores, ideal for discovering and tasting the island’s local products.

Another must-do hike on Terceira is the Rocha do Chambre Trail, located in the island’s center. This trail offers views of endemic flora, pastures, and local fauna. The main highlight is Rocha do Chambre, a 708-meter-high cliff with spectacular views over the Azinhal Valley, Pico Alto, Pico das Cadeirinhas, and Pico Vermelho.

The hike continues through areas of Azorean heather, followed by lunch, and a visit to the Algar do Carvão, an impressive volcanic cave with an underground lake, stalactites, and stalagmites.

On the return to Angra do Heroísmo, there are stops at the Caldeira do Guilherme Moniz and the Quinta dos Açores to discover and taste more local products.
