The Azores, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, are one of the best destinations in the world for observing cetaceans in their natural habitat.

The Azorean Archipelago: A refuge for cetaceans

The geographic location of the Azores is one of the main reasons why the archipelago is so rich in marine life. The deep ocean that surrounds the Azorean islands offers ideal conditions for various species of cetaceans to feed and reproduce, while it is also a transit point for species that use the Azores as a reference point along their migratory routes. Around 29 species of cetaceans have been seen in the Azores, 4 of which are considered residents and, for this reason, can be seen throughout the year. This is the case of the famous sperm whale, the common dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin and the risso dolphin.

Furthermore, the cetacean observation season in the Azores occurs throughout the year, with majority of sightings occurring between May and September, due to better weather conditions and the arrival of a larger variety of species.

Environmental Impact and Conservation

Cetacean observation in the Azores also plays an important role in the conservation of marine life. Sustainable tourism, such as whale watching activities, helps to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the oceans and their animals. During our trips, we ensure that our code of conduct for approaching animals is strictly followed, ensuring that animals are respected while minimizing possible situations that could cause them stress.

Picos de Aventura participates in a variety of projects aiming to promote the conservation of marine species while monitoring them. We are proud to be involved in the COSTA project (monitoring of sea turtles), the MONICET project (monitoring of cetaceans), the Elasmobase project (ecology and conservation of elasmobranchs) and more recently the Procellar-ID (special focus on monitoring seabirds that are seen in the Azores).

What to expect from the activity?

The whale-watching experience in the Azores begins on land with an educational briefing on cetaceans, sighting techniques, safety protocols, and the code of conduct for responsible wildlife observation. This is followed by a guided boat excursion, led by a professional team of skippers, biologists, and lookouts. Our clients embark on an exciting journey across the Atlantic, where they receive countless insights into the species encountered. At the same time, they have the rare privilege of witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

During our tours, you’ll witness a variety of captivating cetacean behaviors, from socializing and feeding to resting peacefully at the surface offering moments of pure wonder and excitement. Although sightings also depend on weather and sea conditions, the high concentration of marine life around the islands makes encounters highly likely.

In Picos de Aventura we can find cetaceans 99% of the time we go out to the sea. And while these majestic creatures are always our priority, we also encounter other remarkable marine species, including sharks, sea turtles, seabirds, and more, making every excursion an unforgettable experience.

Our team of skippers, biologists and lookouts speak several languages, such as Portuguese, English and Spanish.

On board, raincoats and life jackets are available. On speedboat vehicles, raincoats are optional and the use of a vest is mandatory. On the catamaran, vests are on board and the use of covers is not applicable.
