History of the Pineapple of the Azores

The pineapple arrived in the Azores, specifically on the largest island, São Miguel, in the 19th century. The fruit was discovered during the colonization of Brazil and brought to the archipelago, with the goal of becoming an alternative to the orange trade which had been ravaged by disease. In 1864, the first industrial greenhouse was built, capable of housing 800 plants. Later that same year with the help of José Bensaude, the fruit was first exported to England. By the early 20th century, the fruit was being exported to countries such as Germany and Russia. With over 150 years of history, the pineapple of the Azores is a fruit with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.

Cultivation and Characteristics

The pineapple of the Azores is grown in greenhouses, allowing for strict control over the growth conditions. The greenhouses are often heated by a combination of sunlight and warmth generated by the volcanic soil, creating a perfect microclimate. The fruit is known for its unparalleled sweetness and intense flavor, characteristics that set it apart from other varieties. The Azorean pineapple also stands out for its juicy texture and distinctive aroma, making it a perfect ingredient for various recipes. In São Miguel, between 700 and 1000 tons of the “Smooth Cayenne” variety are produced every year.

Health Benefits

In addition to being delicious, the Azorean pineapple is a rich source of nutrients. The fruit contains vitamins C, A, B6, and minerals such as manganese and copper, which are essential for health. Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple, has anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, helping with protein absorption and reducing swelling. It also aids digestion, strengthens the immune system, and is a friend to skin health. Its antioxidant properties help combat free radicals, contributing to healthy aging.
