São Miguel, the largest of the nine islands in the Azores archipelago, is a destination that offers an unique experience of connection with nature and pure relaxation.

The exuberant nature of São Miguel

São Miguel is known for its unique and stunning nature, which ranges from lush green hills, clear lagoons and unique tea plantations. The island is a treat for those who love nature, offering breathtaking landscapes at every corner.

One of the most iconic points on the island is Lagoa das Sete Cidades, one of the greatest postcards of the Azores. With its lagoons in shades of blue and green, Lagoa das Sete Cidades is surrounded by a mountainous landscape, creating a dreamlike landscape. The view from the Vista do Rei viewpoint is simply out of this world.

Lagoa do Fogo is also one of the most unmissable places in São Miguel. Lagoa do Fogo is a true natural paradise, with clear waters that contrast with the green vegetation that surrounds it. The imposing volcanic mountains that surround the lagoon offer a majestic setting, revealing a landscape of incomparable beauty. Visitors can explore the surrounding areas via several trails. These paths offer incredible panoramas of the lagoon and the surrounding landscapes, as well as allowing contact with the local fauna and the exclusive vegetation of the Azores.

You can't miss the Fábrica de Chá Gorreana, which has been cultivating tea since 1883. It is located in the parish of Maia and is the oldest tea plantation in Europe. Teas of various flavors are produced, mostly manually. On your visit to the factory, you can learn more about tea cultivation and its production. You can also try the tea, a wonder that can be enjoyed at any time of year!

Well-being and relaxation in the thermal waters

São Miguel is famous for its hot springs and the therapeutic properties of its waters. There are several spas spread across the island that are perfect for resting the body, mind and soul and replenishing energy.

When it comes to this subject, the parish of Furnas is one of the most sought after places in São Miguel. You can choose between Poça da Dona Beija and Parque Terra Nostra. Poça da Dona Beija is a place that offers several thermal pools for adults and children. In this carefully maintained place, you can enjoy therapeutic baths with iron-rich waters with temperatures reaching 39ºC. A real spa in the middle of nature! The place has some services, such as a souvenir shop, sales of water and soft drinks, clothing, bathrooms and the option to rent lockers. Entry is not free and you must make your reservation online.

Terra Nostra Park is a bicentennial park with a large botanical garden. In addition to the large thermal pool and jacuzzis, whose water temperature varies between 35ºC and 40ºC, you can take the opportunity to stroll around the park and explore it. There you can find several species endemic to the Azores, but also from other parts of the world. Entry is not free.

At this moment, both Poça da Dona Beija and Parque Terra Nostra are temporarily closed for works. However, its opening is coming soon.

In São Miguel, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, you will find the famous Caldeira Velha Natural Monument. The space, with lush vegetation, offers several thermal pools with waters around 25ºC and 30ºC. Entry is only free for island residents. Therefore, it is recommended that you make your reservation online in advance.

Still in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, you will find the Termas das Caldeiras. The place has a thermal pool, whose temperature is around 30ºC. There you can also enjoy massages made with volcanic mud. The space dates back to the 17th century, making it an important historical site for São Miguel. Entry is not free.

In the southwest of São Miguel, in the parish of Ginetes, you will also find the famous Termas da Ferraria. At Ponta da Ferraria, it is possible to bathe right in the sea in natural pools formed by the interaction between lava and ocean waters. It is a truly unique experience! The water temperature can reach 30ºC. To make the most of it, it's important to check tidal conditions. The ideal time to swim is when the tide is at an average level or a little lower, guaranteeing a more pleasant water temperature. This experience is free to access. There is also a thermal SPA on site with a set of thermal water pools. The place has changing rooms and a restaurant available. Treatments are not free, as is entry to the pools.
