With summer approaching, São Miguel invites you to enjoy days surrounded by the sea, hiking trails, and unique natural landscapes outdoors.

The Azorean Sea and Whale Watching

Summer is a great time to explore the Azorean sea. With milder temperatures and calmer ocean conditions, this season offers ideal conditions for maritime activities and whale watching.

Off the coast of São Miguel, it is possible to spot several species of whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. This is one of the most exciting experiences for anyone visiting the Azores, offering close contact with marine life and the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean.

During the whale watching activity, participants are accompanied by specialized guides and marine biologists, who share information about the behavior and characteristics of the species spotted. Every tour is different and surprising, making each experience unique.

Beyond the activity itself, the surrounding scenery makes the experience even more special. The contrast between the deep blue ocean and the island’s green landscapes creates unforgettable moments, perfect to enjoy with family or friends.

For those looking to combine whale and dolphin watching with the discovery of the island’s southern coastline, a full-day experience that includes cetacean watching and a visit to the Islet of Vila Franca do Campo is an excellent choice. The adventure begins at sea, searching for whales and dolphins in their natural habitat, accompanied by a specialized team.

Afterwards, the journey continues to the iconic Islet of Vila Franca do Campo, a Natural Reserve since 1983 and one of São Miguel’s most exclusive bathing areas, accessible only by boat. The programme also includes lunch at a local restaurant in Vila Franca do Campo, offering the opportunity to savour Azorean cuisine while enjoying a full day surrounded by nature, the ocean and breathtaking landscapes.

Canyoning: Adventure and Adrenaline in Nature

For those looking for an active and adrenaline-filled experience, canyoning is one of the must-do activities in São Miguel.

This activity combines hiking, jumps, rappelling and direct contact with rivers and waterfalls hidden in the island’s interior. Along the route, participants cross unique natural landscapes surrounded by lush vegetation and fresh waters.

Summer is an excellent time to try canyoning, as the warmer temperatures make the experience even more enjoyable. Beyond the adventure itself, it is also a unique way to discover some of São Miguel’s wildest and most preserved corners.

The activity is carried out with the guidance of experienced instructors and all the necessary safety equipment, allowing both beginners and more experienced adventurers to enjoy the experience safely.

Pico da Vara Trail

Among the island’s most impressive hiking trails is the Pico da Vara route, leading to the highest point in São Miguel, at 1,105 metres above sea level.

The trail begins in the parish of Santo António Nordestinho, in the municipality of Nordeste. Along the way, the landscape is characterised by dense vegetation and panoramic views over different parts of the island, including Povoação, where the first settlers arrived in São Miguel during the 15th century.

The ascent to Pico da Vara offers a unique opportunity to connect with Azorean nature and discover one of the island’s most preserved areas. The silence of the mountains and the grandeur of the scenery make this hike particularly memorable.

On the way back to Ponta Delgada, along the island’s north coast, it is worth stopping at the Gorreana Tea Factory, one of the only tea factories in Europe still operating for commercial production.

Ribeira Funda – Praia da Viola Trail

Another excellent route for summer days is the Ribeira Funda – Praia da Viola Trail, located on the island’s northern coast. Covering approximately 5.5 kilometres and taking around three hours to complete, this trail combines nature, heritage and coastal scenery.

The walk begins in a more open area before quickly leading into a route surrounded by dense vegetation and streams. Along the way, it is possible to see old watermills that were once used to grind wheat and corn into flour for bread production.

One of the highlights of the trail is the Tio Domingos Viewpoint, which offers beautiful views over Praia da Viola. This small beach, framed by cliffs and natural springs, provides a peaceful and secluded setting, perfect for a break during the hike.

The trail ends in the village of Maia and, on the return to Ponta Delgada, visitors can also take the opportunity to visit the Gorreana Tea Factory and learn more about the Azorean tea-growing tradition.
