Boca do Inferno Viewpoint
The Boca do Inferno Viewpoint is one of the most epic viewpoints in São Miguel. Located in the parish of Sete Cidades, in the western part of the island, this viewpoint offers a panoramic view over Lagoa das Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Canário, Lagoa Rasa, part of the parish of Sete Cidades and part of Serra Devassa.
To discover this fantastic place, you must access the Mata do Canário Forest Park. In addition to the stunning views, the Boca do Inferno Viewpoint also offers an opportunity for visitors to explore the trails that surround the area and enjoy closer contact with the unique nature of the Azores.
Vista do Rei Viewpoint
The Vista do Rei Viewpoint is one of the most famous and spectacular viewpoints in São Miguel. Located in the parish of Sete Cidades, this viewpoint offers a stunning view of Lagoa das Sete Cidades, one of the most iconic postcards in the entire archipelago and one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal.
The viewpoint is named in honor of King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia of Portugal, who visited the island in 1901 and admired the panoramic view from this place.
From this observation point, visitors can enjoy the stunning landscape of the two lagoons, one blue and the other green, that occupy the crater of the ancient dormant volcano. The view is impressive at any time of year, but during sunset, especially, it becomes even more magical, with vivid colors painting the sky and reflecting in the waters of the lagoons.
Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint
The Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint is another incredible viewpoint and a must-visit in São Miguel. Located on the north coast of the island, close to the city of Nordeste, this viewpoint offers stunning views of the cliffs, the Atlantic Ocean and the lush surrounding landscapes.
This viewpoint is very popular for watching one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena, the sunrise. In addition to the viewpoint, there is a garden full of various species of plants, barbecue areas and picnic areas.
The name “Ponta do Sossego” reflects the tranquility and serenity of this location, where visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views while revealing in the sea breeze and the sounds of nature.
Santa Iria Viewpoint
The Miradouro de Santa Iria is located in the parish of Porto Formoso, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, at an altitude of around 190 meters. It is also one of the unmissable viewpoints on São Miguel Island.
The viewpoint offers sweeping views over the magnificent north coast of the Island, from Ribeira Grande to Porto Formoso.
The viewpoint is a great place to watch the sunset, when the colors of the sky merge with the ocean, creating a truly magical landscape.
Castelo Branco Viewpoint
The Castelo Branco Viewpoint is also worth a visit in São Miguel. This is located close to Vila Franca do Campo. On site is a small medieval-style tower, from which you can see, on one side, a fantastic view over Lagoa das Furnas and, on the other, the town of Vila Franca do Campo. It is certainly one of the viewpoints not to be missed on the Green Island.
