The History of Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park

Historically, Ribeira dos Caldeirões was a vital area for the lives of the local population. Over the centuries, watermills were built along the river, harnessing the energy of the waterfalls to grind grain and for other agricultural activities. Many of these mills are still preserved, serving as an important testament to the rural history of the island of São Miguel.

The Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park

The Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park is one of the must-see places in São Miguel, due to its beautiful landscapes, the opportunity to contemplate nature and also to practice outdoor activities.

In the park, you can see hydrangeas and cryptomerias. You can also enjoy the beautiful and impressive Ribeira dos Caldeirões waterfall and other smaller waterfalls.

There is also a picnic area on site, with several areas with tables, barbecues and bathrooms. The park also has a cafeteria and a souvenir shop.

Entrance to the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park is free and the site also has free parking.

The water mills

One of the main highlights of the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park are the water mills. These devices, which marked the agricultural development of the region, date back centuries and were used to grind grain and produce flour, serving as a means of subsistence and income for several local families. As such, these mills have an inestimable historical value for the island of São Miguel and the Archipelago.

Today, some of these mills have been restored and maintained as part of the region’s cultural heritage, offering visitors a window into the Azores’ agricultural past.

The old millers’ houses are also present in the Park. Walking through it gives the feeling of being transported to another era
