Pico da Vara Trail <\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the island\u2019s most impressive hiking trails is the Pico da Vara route, leading to the highest point in S\u00e3o Miguel, at 1,105 metres above sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail begins in the parish of Santo Ant\u00f3nio Nordestinho<\/strong>, in the municipality of Nordeste. Along the way, the landscape is characterised by dense vegetation and panoramic views over different parts of the island, including Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o, where the first settlers arrived in S\u00e3o Miguel during the 15th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ascent to Pico da Vara offers a unique opportunity to connect with Azorean nature and discover one of the island\u2019s most preserved areas. The silence of the mountains and the grandeur of the scenery make this hike particularly memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another excellent route for summer days is the Ribeira Funda \u2013 Praia da Viola Trail, located on the island\u2019s northern coast. Covering approximately 5.5 kilometres and taking around three hours to complete, this trail combines nature, heritage and coastal scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The walk begins in a more open area before quickly leading into a route surrounded by dense vegetation and streams. Along the way, it is possible to see old watermills that were once used to grind wheat and corn into flour for bread production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights of the trail is the Tio Domingos Viewpoint, which offers beautiful views over Praia da Viola. This small beach, framed by cliffs and natural springs, provides a peaceful and secluded setting, perfect for a break during the hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail ends in the village of Maia and, on the return to Ponta Delgada, visitors can also take the opportunity to visit the Gorreana Tea Factory and learn more about the Azorean tea-growing tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
