The Parish<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With stunning scenery and surrounded by lush vegetation, Faial da Terra, known by locals as the \u201cNativity Scene of the Island,\u201d offers visitors a unique experience of close contact with nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historians believe that settlers established the parish as one of the first settlements on S\u00e3o Miguel in the early 16th century. The name Faial da Terra comes from the abundant presence of the \u201cFaia-da-Terra\u201d (Myrica Faya), a small tree native to the Macaronesian region, which once dominated the island\u2019s lowland forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the parish, you will find the Portinho do Faial da Terra, featuring a mostly pebble beach area as well as a small swimming pool. Near the port is the Porto Novo Picnic Park, which offers traditional straw huts, barbecue grills, tables, and benches\u2014a peaceful spot for a picnic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sanguinho<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Above Faial da Terra lies Sanguinho, a small place rich in history but largely abandoned. This area gradually lost its inhabitants due to emigration to the United States and Canada. Additionally, difficulties in access and a lack of amenities led to its complete abandonment by the mid-20th century. However, some of the houses have been restored and converted into rural accommodations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salto do Prego Waterfall<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The highlight of Faial da Terra is the Salto do Prego Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls on S\u00e3o Miguel, accessible via a hiking trail. The route begins in the village, first along a paved road and then on a dirt path. Along the way, visitors cross small streams, wooden bridges, and a mix of typical Azorean vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hike is of moderate difficulty, but the effort is rewarded with one of the most impressive waterfalls on S\u00e3o Miguel. Surrounded by lush, almost wild scenery, the Salto do Prego Waterfall captivates all who visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
