Located in the heart of São Miguel Island, Congro Lagoon is one of the region’s best-kept natural treasures. A visit here is a must!

This corner of paradise offers a unique experience, combining tranquility, natural beauty, and a sense of seclusion that allows visitors to connect with nature. Congro Lagoon was formed by a phreatomagmatic eruption. This type of eruption occurs when magma interacts with water, resulting in a series of large explosions.

Congro Lagoon, located in Vila Franca do Campo, is accessible via a trail that begins on a secondary road. The path to the lagoon is an adventure in itself, passing through dense vegetation that gives the sensation of being in the middle of an enchanted forest.

Upon arriving at the lagoon, visitors are greeted by an emerald-green mirror of water, surrounded by slopes covered in lush vegetation. Congro Lagoon is small compared to other lagoons on the island, but its charm lies precisely in its more intimate scale and serene atmosphere. The absence of large crowds allows for total immersion in the tranquility of the place, making it a perfect refuge for those seeking a moment of peace and contemplation.

The vegetation around Congro Lagoon is diverse and dense, primarily composed of cryptomeria, beech trees, ferns, and other endemic plants of the Azores. This environment provides an ideal habitat for various species of birds and small mammals. Due to the abundant vegetation in the area, there is much wildlife near the lagoon, such as São Miguel bullfinches, common buzzards, grey wagtails, and Azorean wood pigeons. In the water, two species of fish currently live: carp and perch.

What to do at Congro Lagoon? Hike! A perfect activity for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. The trail is about 700 meters long, but it’s well worth it! The access is not the easiest, as it is in the midst of nearly untouched nature. Sometimes, the path can be muddy. Appropriate footwear is recommended, as the terrain can be wet and slippery. The descent takes about 15 minutes, and the ascent follows the same path. Once you reach the lagoon, take the time to relax, enjoy the landscape, and capture the natural beauty of the area through photographs.

Congro Lagoon is a hidden gem in São Miguel that provides a unique experience. Its serene beauty, combined with the rich biodiversity and tranquil environment, makes it an unmissable spot for anyone visiting the island. Congro Lagoon is more than just a tourist spot; it is an invitation to reconnect with nature and discover the hidden magic of the Azores.
